Safety Alert

Driving on worn or damaged tyres is one of the leading causes of accidents in the UAE. Regular inspection can save lives.

Your tyres are the only contact point between your vehicle and the road. Knowing when to replace them is crucial for your safety, especially in Dubai's extreme heat and occasional heavy rainfall.

1. Tread Depth Below 3mm

While the UAE legal minimum is 1.6mm, we strongly recommend replacement at 3mm for optimal safety, especially during rain.

The Coin Test

Insert a 1 Dirham coin into the tread groove:

  • Safe: If the outer silver ring is hidden
  • Replace: If the silver ring is fully visible

2. Visible Cracks or Cuts

Dubai's intense UV exposure and heat cause rubber degradation. Check both the tread and sidewalls for:

  • Deep cuts or gashes
  • Cracks in the rubber (dry rot)
  • Exposed cords or fabric
  • Missing chunks of rubber

Action Required: Any visible sidewall damage requires immediate replacement. This is non-negotiable.

3. Bulges or Blisters

A bulge on your tyre sidewall indicates internal structural failure. This is a tyre failure waiting to happen, especially at high speeds on Dubai's highways.

Immediate Action Required

If you notice a bulge or blister, do NOT drive the vehicle. A blowout at highway speed can be catastrophic. Call for mobile tyre service immediately.

4. Uneven Wear Patterns

Uneven wear indicates underlying issues that need addressing:

Center Wear

Cause: Over-inflation

Solution: Adjust pressure to manufacturer spec

Edge Wear

Cause: Under-inflation

Solution: Check for leaks, inflate properly

One-Sided Wear

Cause: Misalignment

Solution: Professional wheel alignment

Patchy Wear

Cause: Imbalanced wheels

Solution: Wheel balancing service

5. Age Over 5-6 Years

Even with good tread, tyres degrade over time. In Dubai's extreme climate, we recommend replacement after 5 years maximum, regardless of appearance.

How to Check Tyre Age

Look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last 4 digits indicate manufacturing date:

Example: DOT XXXX XXXX 2219

  • 22 = Week 22 of the year
  • 19 = Year 2019

This tyre was manufactured in May 2019 and should be replaced by 2024-2025.

Bonus Warning Signs

  • Vibration while driving: Could indicate internal damage or imbalance
  • Frequent pressure loss: Suggests slow leak or valve issues
  • Difficulty maintaining traction: Especially dangerous in wet conditions
  • Increased road noise: May signal uneven wear

Professional Inspection Recommended

While these DIY checks are helpful, nothing replaces professional inspection. We offer FREE tyre health checks at all Turbo Express locations.

Our certified technicians use specialized equipment to detect issues invisible to the naked eye, including internal structural damage and alignment problems.

Don't Wait for Disaster

Tyre failure at 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road isn't just inconvenient—it's life-threatening. If you've identified any of these warning signs, schedule a replacement today.

Remember: Tyres are your vehicle's most critical safety feature. The cost of replacement is minimal compared to the cost of an accident.
